An unforgettable pictorial tale of magic lanterns and their ties with cinema and avant-garde art. Alongside glass slides from the 1700s and 1800s, films by film-makers who paid tribute to the ancestor of the film camera are presented, as well as the works and installations of leading contemporary artists such as Anthony McCall, Ugo Nespolo and Bill Viola, artists who have been inspired by the form or who evoke the images it created.

A series of images taken from the vast photographic archive of Sam Shaw, one of the greatest photographers to work with Hollywood stars, and who helped to increase their mystique. The photographs are taken from his coverage from the sets of two great films: One-eyed Jacks (1961), directed by Marlon Brando (who also starred in the film) and Michael Cacoyannis’s Zorba the Greek (1965), which starred Anthony Quinn.
